From used EVs to home charging: What’s next for salary sacrifice?

Salary sacrifice remains one of the strongest growth areas in new and used vehicle leasing across the UK.

The latest BVRLA Leasing Outlook shows that salary sacrifice grew by almost 165% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2026, making it the sector’s fastest-growing funding option.

More affordable electric vehicles are helping schemes appeal to a wider audience, while used EVs are creating another potential route into the market.

For leasing companies, brokers and OEMs, that growth brings opportunity, but also a need to offer greater choice, create better customer journeys and manage schemes efficiently as volumes increase.

Building the right EV mix

The EV market is no longer defined by a limited number of manufacturers and models. Established OEMs are now competing alongside a growing range of newer entrants, bringing more choice and more competitive pricing.

As Rhys Harrison-Whitcombe explained earlier this year in his article on building a balanced EV fleet, vehicles should be assessed against their whole-life cost, driver requirements and intended use. Funding strategy, aftersales support, insurance, residual values and charging access can all influence whether a vehicle represents genuine long-term value.

The same principle applies to salary sacrifice. A strong proposition should offer enough choice to meet different budgets and driver requirements, while giving employees clear information and providers the controls needed to manage that choice effectively.

What’s new in Gensen Salary Sacrifice?

The enhanced checkout developments focused users on contract details.

We have continued to develop Gensen Salary Sacrifice throughout 2026, focusing on improvements that help our partners broaden their propositions and convert interest into better-qualified enquiries.

Our enhanced checkout now clearly distinguishes between order-ready enquiries and quick callback requests. It captures more consistent information about the selected vehicle, options, mileage and contract term, giving partners a clearer understanding of each user’s needs and intent.

Employees also receive better guidance on what happens next, including the employer approval process, alongside a branded confirmation email summarising their enquiry. The result is a clearer customer experience and cleaner information for partner sales and order teams.

Initially, Gensen Salary Sacrifice supports the LEX used electric car API.

We have also expanded Gensen Salary Sacrifice to support used EVs, thereby offering real-time deals with lower pricing and ultra-quick delivery.

A record 86,943 used EVs changed hands during the first quarter of 2026, that’s 32% more than in the same period last year. Incorporating eligible used vehicles into Gensen Salary Sacrifice enables providers to offer lower-cost alternatives to employees who may previously have considered a new EV beyond their budget.

With a 474% increase in used car salary sacrifice, it’s clear that used EVs complement new-car schemes, helping providers create a broader proposition that can serve more employees and customer requirements.

What comes next?

Integrating EV chargers choices - in both product and funding method.

Our next developments will take Gensen Salary Sacrifice beyond the vehicle quotation journey by making it easier for partners to deliver and manage a more complete salary sacrifice proposition.

We are working to integrate EV home chargers into the platform, enabling eligible employees to consider their vehicle and charging requirements through a more joined-up journey.

We are also developing new customer-management functionality which will give our partners a simpler, more efficient way to manage their salary sacrifice customers directly within Gensen Salary Sacrifice, whilst offering real-time analytics and management reporting.

As always, we shape these developments around our partners' operational needs and feedback.

Whether you are entering the salary sacrifice market or looking to improve an established proposition, BCF Wessex combines Gensen technology with specialist scheme design, tax consultancy, documentation, communication planning, training and ongoing technical support.

Visit our Contact page and submit your details - we’re happy to discuss where the market is heading and how we can help your proposition keep pace.
